Red Poll’s milk is higher in protein than black & white cows making it ideal for cheese making. As we are a very small set up we were looking for cheeses that are not practical for the larger mechanised dairies to make. We have therefore launched our version of a local cheese, Colwick Cheese, that has not been made commercially for years.
We unveiled our Colwick Cheese at the Artisan Cheese Fair at the Melton Mowbray Cattle Market back in May 2013.
We also presented Colwick Cheese at the Melton Mowbray Food Festival, where Rachel Green used Colwick Cheese with blackberries & brown sugar flashed in a hot oven, for a quick seasonal dessert.
We also enjoyed a day at Billesdon Annual Farmers Market on Sunday 13th October.
Following the Cheese Fair we were contacted by Jamie Oliver’s TV Production Company who came to see us. In the summer of 2013 we welcomed Jamie & Jimmy to the farm where they enjoyed a couple of days filming and tasting the cheese. We were also invited to Jamie’s Restaurant in Nottingham, and then their cafe at Southend Pier for filming. We were down at Southend the same day that Usain Bolt was also filming for the show. The results could be seen on the first episode of Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast. (shown on Channel 4, January 10th 2014!!!)
Thanks to Jamie, Jimmy & their lovely crew for the inspiration, challenge (immense indeed!) & opportunities that have followed. The best of these have been meeting & supplying chefs & shop people from Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire & Rutland. Thank you to everyone who has bought our products and passed on helpful comments.
In November 2013 we were awarded a grant for new cheese room and fridges, work on them is nearly completed. We are looking forward to moving in the next few weeks.
We are introducing a milk vending machine at the farm for all our customers, which is due to arrive mid January. Plans are well under way for an “Opening Belvoir Ridge Creamery” Celebration!!! …with cheesey food of course.
